MYSTERIOUS PLACES ON EARTH

MC MURDO DRY VALLEYS

The McMurdo Dry Valleys are a row of valleys in Antarctica located within Victoria Land west of McMurdo Sound. The terrain looks like something not of this Earth; The region includes many interesting geological features including Lake Vida and the Onyx River, Antarctica’s longest river. The valley’s floor occasionally contains a perennially frozen lake with ice several meters thick. It is also one of the world’s most extreme deserts Under the ice, in the extremely salty water, live mysterious simple organisms, a subject of on-going research. Scientists consider the Dry Valleys perhaps an important source of insights into possible extraterrestrial life.

MOUNT RORAIMA

Since long before the arrival of European explorers, the mountain has held a special significance for the indigenous people of the region, and it is central to many of their myths and legends It is a pretty remarkable place. It is a tabletop mountain with sheer 400-metre high cliffs on all sides. There is only one ‘easy’ way up, on a natural staircase-like ramp on the Venezuelan side – to get up any other way takes and experienced rock climber. On the top of the     mountain it rains almost every day, washing away most of the   nutrients for plants to grow   and creating a unique landscape on the bare sandstone surface.

AOKIGAHARA FOREST(JAPAN)

Called "the perfect place to die," the Aokigahara forest has the unfortunate distinction of the world's second most popular place to take one's life. (The first is the Golden Gate Bridge.) Since the 1950s, Japanese business have wandered in, and at least 500 of them haven't wandered out,at an increasing rate of between 10 and 30 per year.Recently these numbers have increased even more, with a record 78 suicides in 2002.

DEVILS SEA(DRAGONS TRIANGLE)

The Devil’s Sea (or Dragon’s Triangle, take your pick of which sounds more ominous) is an area of the Pacific Ocean as riddled with strange happenings as its Atlantic counterpart near Bermuda. Located off the coast of Japan, it’s been the site of countless claims of unexplained phenomena including magnetic anomalies, inexplicable lights and objects, and of course, mysterious disappearances. The area is even considered a danger by Japanese fishing authorities.
One story has it that in 1952 the Japanese government sent out a research vessel, the Kaio Maru No. 5, to investigate the mysteries of the Devil’s Sea. Naturally, of course, the Kaio Maru No. 5 and its crew of 31 people were never seen again. Another story tells of Kublai Khan’s disastrous attempts to invade Japan by crossing the Devil’s Sea, losing at least 40 000 men in the process.

       GROOM LAKE,NEVADA

Groom Lake, Nevada

The lake is mysterious for one reason and one reason only: Area 51.  This secretive military base has been the subject of  conspiracy theories, documentaries, movies, and academic debate for over half a century.  What goes on in there is still not know but many conspiracy theorists say that the base contains remnants of alien spaceships and is the home for cutting edge UFO research.  We may never find out as the guards are authorized to shoot on sight if you even get near the base.
WOOMERA PROHIBITED AREA,SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Woomera Prohibited Area, South Australia

From the name of the facility itself, you can conclude that most of the public hasn’t ventured into this place. Although its enormous size and location makes the facility a difficult secret to keep, the facility’s highly restricted airspace and colossal exclusion zone are enough to keep the place cloaked in mystery. Literally only a handful is aware of the goings-on within this massive weapons testing range.
MUMMY OF SANGHA TENZIN

Mummy Of Sangha Tenzin, Himachal Pradesh, India

A MUMMY of a Tibetan Buddhist monk, believed to be about 500 years old, has been found in India's northern Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh. The mummy, identified as that of monk Sangha Tenzin, was found inside a tomb at Ghuen village in the cold and remote Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, about 6000 metres above sea level.

In 1975 an earthquake in northern India opened an old tomb containing the mummified body of monk Sangha Tenzin. In 2004, the local police excavated the tomb and removed the mummy. The mummy is remarkably well preserved, with skin intact and hair on his head. He died in the seated position, with a rope around the neck and thighs (an esoteric practice recorded in few Buddhist documents). Victor Mair, a consulting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, was quoted as saying the mummy was at least 500 years old. According to the report, the mummy is remarkably well preserved for its age. Its skin is unbroken and there is hair on the head.
The mummy of Sangha Tenzin is now on display in a temple in Gue, two miles from where he was excavated, in the Himachal Pradesh region of India, bordering Tibet. Controlled by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and isolated in the Himalayas, the town is very difficult to reach. The temple where the mummy rests is open to the public.
